What is Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)?

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the amount of energy (measured in calories) your body needs to perform its most basic life-sustaining functions while at rest. These functions include breathing, circulating blood, controlling body temperature, cell production, and brain and nerve function.

BMR represents the minimum number of calories your body requires to stay alive and function properly if you were to rest all day without any physical activity. It does not include calories burned from movement, exercise, or digestion.

Several factors influence your BMR, including age, gender, weight, height, and body composition (muscle burns more calories than fat). For example, younger people and those with more muscle mass usually have a higher BMR.

What is a Calorie?

A calorie is a unit of energy that measures how much energy the body gets from food and drinks. In nutrition, the term “Calorie” (with a capital C) actually refers to a kilocalorie, which is equal to 1,000 small calories. It represents the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree Celsius. Our bodies need calories to perform basic functions such as breathing, digestion, circulation, and physical activity. The energy in food comes from three main nutrients: carbohydrates and proteins provide 4 Calories per gram, while fats provide 9 Calories per gram.
